Meditations on the American Spirit

07. April 2004 - 31. May 2004 Curator: Nancy Matthews

After the opening of the exhibition “True Colors” in Washington, D.C. in February 2002 and an enthusiastic response to the show, the American audience had the opportunity to view it in New York and Atlanta. The exhibition’s overseas tour began on 15 October, 2003 at the Allied Museum in Berlin and travelled to Belfast and Portadown in Northern Ireland and to Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey. After Tirana, Albania, the next stopover was the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum. We eagerly expected the exhibition of works by Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Sally Mann, Herb Alpert, Darryl Pottorf, Sam Scott, Meridith Martens, Donna Levinstone and other artists. “True Colors: Meditations on the American Spirit”, organised by Meridian International Center in Washington, D.C., is an artistic response to the tragedy of 11 September. Inspired by artists themselves and seen by Meridian as a meaningful way to put the events into perspective both for an international audience and for Americans, this exhibition is a meditation on some of the qualities that made the people of the United States able to respond to and recover from 11 September. The sixty-eight participating artists were from different parts of the USA No one was left untouched by these events. Many from Washington or New York witnessed the attack from their windows or lost friends, studios and a portion of their life’s work.
